NFL concussion settlement awaits judges

Word this week on the next step in brain trauma research was expected to spin good news into an i Kerry Hyder Jersey sue that has met criticism. The NFL is under pre sure for its handling of concu sions, with thousands of former players filing suit. A federal judge has yet to approve a proposed $765 million settlement. The NFL's past donations for concu sion-related research include a $30 million grant to the National Institutes of Health. On Thursday, the league and partner GE announced 16 organizations are receiving $300,000 each for research on better diagnosing and treating mild traumatic brain injury.Meanwhile, plaintiffs continue to question whether the NFL concealed the danger of concu sions.Among parties expre sing concern, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune, is the family of Junior Seau. A standout linebacker for the Chargers and Pro Football Hall of Fame member, Seau killed himself in 2012.Studies of his brain determined he had CTE, a degenerative brain disease that can be caused by repeated trauma over time. The settlement addre sed i sues raised by former players. Seau's family is pushing more deeply into the matter Nevin Lawson Jersey ."In short, Mr. Seau's children have their own claims for the wrong NFL did to them," the attorneys wrote in a statement to the U.S. District Court in Philadelphia, where the settlement is being reviewed. "His children are not suing for their father's pain and suffering; they are suing for their own. ... While the Settlement recognizes the separate nature of these claims by establishing a category of 'Derivative Claimants,' it provides no independent compensation to these plaintiffs of any kind and provides zero justification for its award allocation."The initial settlement was Ameer Abdullah Jersey rejected, with a Judge Anita Brody wanting to review its worthine s. Brody's decision followed months of negotiation. According to Sports Illustrated:Brody denied that preliminary motion, stating in her ruling that she was concerned with a lack of documentation regarding the fairne s of the final monetary figure, and whether the players involved would be diagnosed and paid properly based on their claims.Counsel for the Plaintiffs and the NFL Parties have made a commendable effort to reach a negotiated resolution to this dispute, Judge Brody wrote. There is nothing to indicate that the Settlement is not the result of good faith, arm Ricky Wagner Jersey s-length negotiations between adversaries. Nonethele s, on the basis of the present record, I am not yet satisfied that the Settlement has no obvious deficiencies, grants no preferential treatment to segments of the cla s, and falls within the range of po sible approval. As the NFL gathers for its showcase event in Super Bowl XLVIII in New York, it must wonder whether its agreement will stand addition inspection.Contributing: A sociated Pre s
