Western Pond Turtle laid eggs

Hi Seahorse,

This may be a question for a new thread. I can repost, or you can move to a new thread if you like.

We've had our fully-grown female Western Pond Turtle for 13 years before she laid eggs. Two in the tank, underwater as she had no place to plant them properly. Heck, I wasn't even sure of the sex until she revealed by laying the eggs!

With an adopted 5yo male RES in her tank, she started laying 4 to 8 eggs annually, which leads to my question... Do you know if the presence of a courting/mating male stimulates egg production in females? Granted the mating of a RES and a WTP may or may not produce fertile eggs, I'm wondering of our female Western Pond Turtle will slow (or stop) laying eggs now that our make RES is no longer with us. (He was rehomed to an outdoor pond)

Regards,

Jay

Sadly I know nothing about turtle reproduction. But I expect like other creatures females have eggs in their bodies over their lifetime but I'm not sure what triggers them to lay them. It is also possible that once eggs are produced and laid she may continue to on an irregular basis for awhile. Have you tried to find info on Austin's Turtle page? They have an extensive species area. We have rather limited reference info I'm afraid. I wish we could help more.
It is possible one of our members might be able to answer this question.... hoping one will chime in here.
