Painted Turtle Losing Color
Hello everyone! I just joined this community in the hopes of finding an answer to my current predicament. I am the proud owner of a 3 year old Southern Painted Turtle. She has recently been losing the color of her beautiful red stripe as well as on her skin. Otherwise, she is completely healthy. Her shell is firm, her eyes and nose clear, active, excellent appetite, etc.
I have two questions:
1. What process actually produces color in turtles?
2. How do I fix this issue in my tank?
Here are my tank specs:
Size: 75 gallons, 40 gallons filled with water.
Filter: Fluval U3, weekly water changes for crystal clear water quality.
Hot end lighting: Double dome light with one 75 watt daylight blue heating bulb and one 5.0 UVB 13 watt tropical lightbulb.
Cool end lighting: Just replaced this in hopes of solving the problem from a double dome light with two of the 5.0 UVBs to a reptisun terrarium hood with T5 HO high output.
Chemicals I use in the tank during water changes:
1. API aglae fix
2. API sludge destroyer
3. Zoomed Reptisafe
4. Acurel F
Every month I put a terrafauna reptoguard tablet in the tank which my turtle likes to eat although I am not sure as whether this is okay or not.
My turtle eats every other day the recommended amount of zoomed's gourmet aquatic turtle food. I have tried giving her romaine and other greens but she rarely eats them. I also recently purchased her live waxworms. I also have been feeding her freezed dried shrimp as a treat. Please note that the gourmet blend includes cranberries, mealworms, pellets, and dried shrimp.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
