Turtle Friends?

This might sound like a silly question but... do turtles get lonely? I just got a baby painted turtle and am wondering if he will be happy by himself or should I start thinking about getting him a friend?

They appear to be somewhat social when you see them all piled on top of each other on a log in the local pond. lol. I have heard of a member on here who bought 2 of 3 turtles from a local pet shop and after a year the 3rd was still there...so feeling sorry for it, he went and bought it and added it to his tank. They immediately snuggled up together and I would say that they totally remembered each other. And therefore would also have missed each other's company. Once they are sexually mature, 5-7 years old, they need space and territory too. You can put females together but 2 males may be territorial. You can't tell what they are until they are 4-5 years old. 2 turtles will need a minimum 75 gallon but eventually a 120 gallon.

Thanks for responding! That's a very cute story. I think I'm going to get him a friend but we will see. I won't be able to tell what he is for quite a few years so... lol I might just try now and see what happens when they mature! :)
