I just moved into a new house (new to me, built in the 50's) and am concerned with the color of the water in my YBS tank. It could just be that it's fresh water (hasn't settled, filter needs to build up beneficial bacteria, etc.). It's city tap water, and the plumbing in the house is fairly new, but until I get a test kit (soon) I'm not sure of anything else.
It got me thinking about using RO/DI water though, as I already have a saltwater nano tank. I've also always hated the water marks around the water line on the tank as well. Reading up on it though, it seems like RO/DI isn't a good choice for freshwater anything, as it removes a lot of the natural minerals needed by fish and turtles.
I've read a few comments that RO/DI plus an additive such as one of the ones listed below works, but I really don't know a) what my YBS requires in his water to be healthy, and b) what these types of additives add to the water. If it's the correct mix, then I feel like it would be better to remove everything (good and bad, fresh clean water) and then add back only the good minerals that he needs in the correct proportions.
Does anyone have any experience with RO/DI and freshwater?
Any experience with the above additives?
Anyone know what a YBS actually needs as far as mineral content/other in their water? Ratio/ppm?
