Can you feed chicken to a turtle?

My turtle likes cooked chicken. This is obviously not a natural food for a turtle, but is it okay for me to feed it to him?

That is not a healthy food for a turtle of any species. Feeding it chicken is likely only going to make it sick.

What kind of turtle is it?

That's what I thought. I just gave him a tiny piece once, so hopefully it won't upset him.

I'm not sure what he technically is, we're always just called them painted turtles. I don't know if that's an actual kind of turtle or just a nickname. Here's a pic of him. What do you think he is?

That looks like a painted turtle to me, can you get a photo of the underside of its shell?

Hmm... seems I've misplaced my camera. I'll post a pic once I find it.

Yes, that is a painted turtle.
It looks pretty small, please tell me it's in an aquarium with a filter and clean water, basking spots, and regulated temps on either end of the tank, and proper lighting?

At that size/age it should be eating things like worms, small small crayfish, feeder fish (minnows and guppys), aquatic plants like anacharis, and small turtle pellets.

Painted turtles need UV light and heat lamps, and plenty of places to get out of the water if they choose, but still plenty of swimming room at same time. Even at that size the tank should be at least 30 gallons (about 1/3 full of water) to allow it room to grow and for temp regulation. By the time its full grown it should have at least 75 gallons for a tank size to allow it space enough to get exercise.

Feeding cooked meat to turtles can cause digestive problems which can make a turtle very sick. Cooked meat is not a part of their natural diet, and their systems are not designed to handle that.

I disagree that feeding cooked meat of any kind to a turtle is ok. I've kept various turtles for years and have learned through research that the animal fats in meats we consume can be very detrimental to a turtle's health. Natural foods, like earth worms, feeder fish, shrimp, etc. are your best bet. Just because a turtle eats whatever you give him, doesn't mean it's good for him! Do some more research to keep your turtle the healthiest he can be. Good luck.
