Default box turtle, hibernation importance?

I have a 20 year old male box turtle that I have had for about 2 weeks. I have read various things on the internet on hibernation and was just wondering, how important is it? I am pretty sure that Max has never been hibernated. Should I try next year?

If he never has then he probably won't or need it even now. Especially if he is kept indoors. So... is he kept outdoors or has he been outdoors all his life?
