Default Can anyone tell me what kind of turtle this is?

We found this turtle swimming in the fountain in the yard (Massachusetts).

looks like a alligator snapping turtle baby to me, be careful if it is because when they grow up they get real huge around 70 kg and they can bite our fingers off in a snap =)

I'm in massachusetts as well. I would say that it definatly looks like a snapping turtle baby. You should not keep it and get into a pond.

It is either a common snapping turtle or an alligator snapping turtle. I can not tell in that pic. the shapes of their heads are different from above. Also note that it can not pull it's head within the shell. Other aquatic turtles can put their heads past the shells rim. this is a snapping turtle and can inflict a painful bite even at this size.

Yep, snappin' turtle of some kind, not a good pet.

My grandpa used to say if one gets ahold of you he won't let go til lightning strkes, gramps was kind of full of it sometimes though.

I'm betting that, if you're in Mass., it's a common snapper; not an alligator snapping turtle.

LOL mine always said that too! or maybe he said it was until the turtle heard thunder...
